We include people who call themselves Buddhist and have practiced for decades, and people who are interested only in meditation practice. We are of all ages and we welcome anyone with an interest in Buddhism or meditation. We are based in Killaloe, County Clare and include active members from all over the region. We exist mainly through events which include daily meditation practice, community (Sangha) evenings, and monthly retreat days.
Triratna buddhism

A human life inevitably has some elements of suffering, such as sickness, old age, bereavement etc. Buddhism faces this reality and provides a path that helps to accept and alleviate life’s suffering. The ultimate goal is to fully realize freedom from suffering and achieve full liberation or enlightenment and reach ‘Nirvana’. Triratna (formerly Friends of the Western Buddhist Order) is a form of Buddhism brought to the west by Sangharakshita – an English man who spent two decades in India studying Buddhism under various teachers. He has worked extensively to translate Buddhist texts and concepts to English while emphasizing its relevance to modern western life.
There is no expectation that people attending courses or visiting the centre will be Buddhists, nor that they will agree with Buddhist teachings. Classes are an opportunity to learn and test out Buddhist practices in the light of one’s own experience, and in an atmosphere of friendly, encouraging, open communication. Teaching is done by members of the Triratna Buddhist Order who are themselves experienced in the practice and study Buddhism.
A meditation course can provide a good introduction to Buddhism. The program or focus might vary, but all the introduction courses teach the two core meditation practices: mindfulness of breathing, and development of loving kindness (metta).

The Killaloe Meditation Centre is closely connected to the Dublin Buddhist Centre which is the main base of the Triratna Buddhist Community in Ireland.
Meet Our Teachers SANGHASHURA and Ratnadeva

Sanghashura, our founder and manager, began a practice of mindfulness and meditation while studying cello at the Royal College of Music in London. This interest quite naturally led him to Buddhism and in 1992 he became a regular attendee of the West London Buddhist Centre.
After being ordained in 2005, Sanghashura started teaching men and women to meditate in Killaloe, introducing them to the wider context of the Triratna Buddhist Community. He has devoted himself to creating what we call Sangha, a community of people who want to deepen a practice of meditation and Buddhism together, supporting each other in this pursuit.
He firmly believes that the best way to transform the world is to transform oneself, at the same time as offering the hand of friendship to anyone who is inspired to embark on this journey.

After thirty-six years in the UK, Ratnedeva is very glad to return home to Ireland and to settle in East Clare. Having worked in the UK as an industrial chemist and an environmental scientist, he later spent a decade with Buddhafield—an organisation that runs camping retreats and a festival, primarily in Devon and Somerset. During this time, he was ordained in 2013. He then moved to London for five years to join the West London Buddhist Centre, where he served as the Men’s Mitra Convenor. In 2023, he qualified as a Breathworks Mindfulness Teacher.
While in the UK, Ratnadeva explored the connections between the Dharma and the Earth-based spiritual tradition of Druidry. The Triratna tradition has long seen paganism as a possible support for the flourishing of Buddhism. He is now excited by the opportunity to continue these explorations on home soil, and to discover how the Dharma might find expression through a Celtic idiom.
